Summer‐themed Weaving

Janis is a designer and hand weaver of luxury fabrics with many years’ experience. Having completed an Honours Degree in Woven Textiles; she spends her days weaving her fabrics which are for sale, both direct and on line. She works on commissions as well as teaching a new generation of weavers. Janis’ own work ranges from the small gift items such as greeting cards, fabric covered notebooks, zipped purses, keyrings, and scented pin cushions to one-off luxury scarves for both men and women; throws, cushions and framed artwork. Recently, for a commission she had to weave four and a half metres of herringbone tweed which will ultimately become a tailored jacket. Janis has been a professional weaver and designer for 25 years. During this time she has taken part in numerous community and educational projects. One particular project was to create a series of woven panels to be displayed at the Borders General Hospital in Melrose. In 2019, Janis was fortunate to travel to China where she was employed to teach two groups of female weavers. Janis taught them to use more contemporary, marketable fabrics to help the women have an income from their textiles.

During the weaving workshop in June, participants will make a Summer themed wall‐hanging using a range of decorative weaving techniques, fancy yarns, and embellishments to create a vibrant beach scene. All materials will be provided and the small looms will be warped so participants can begin weaving straightaway. Please bring a pair of scissors with you. If you have any yarns or maybe something with a memory attached to it and would like to incorporate into your weaving please feel free to bring them. One the day of the workshops, Janis will bring a small range of textiles, which will be for sale at 10% discount. There will be something for everybody from greeting cards, lavender filled pin cushions, covered notebooks, zipped purses and scarves for both men and women all made from luxurious fibres such as line, silk, cashmere and alpaca.

There will be a summer drink and strawberries and cream following the workshop.
